Facts and History - Insulating Paint
Here are some facts that you as a consumer need to know about Insulation, “Insulating Additives for Paint” and how INSULADD® Insulating Paints and Additives work. Since we introduced   INSULADD® products in 1996 there have been scores of Companies on the internet claiming to have similar products.
We feel that an informed consumer is a wise consumer thus it is important for you to understand the facts and the fiction that you read on the internet about “Insulating Paints and Additives”.
Heat always travels towards cold. This is a scientific fact!
You have insulation in your home (usually fiberglass wool or foam) to REDUCE or SLOW DOWN the transfer or flow of heat from warm areas in to colder areas. Insulation reduces the RATE  of heat transfer through the walls and ceilings of your home however it does not change the AMOUNT  of heat that is trying to enter or escape your home !
INSULADD Insulating additive for paint forms an invisible barrier (radiant barrier) in paint which REFLECTS  heat away from the painted surface. INSULADD REDUCES the AMOUNT   (reflects) of heat that is trying to enter your home (summer time) or escape from your home. (winter time )
By applying INSULADD to the walls and ceilings of your home you can now reduce both the RATE and AMOUNT of heat trying to enter or escape your home! INSULADD reduces the heat loading or “work” that your home’s existing insulation is dealing with thus creating a more energy efficient insulation system.
The FACTS and the FICTION about ceramic microspheres, Insulating house paint, and the NASA connection.
There are numerous products claiming to be like INSULADD® advertised on the internet as “Insulating Additives for Paint”, “Hollow insulating ceramic microspheres” and the like. Here are the facts & the fiction about these products:
FACTS:
1)     The Space shuttle uses ceramic insulation.
2)     NASA developed ceramic insulating technology.
3)     Hollow ceramic microspheres exist and are very commonly used a light-weight fillers in paints and plastics. These microspheres have no thermally reflective properties nor are they thick enough to act like your homes insulation.
4)      INSULADD®  has patented technology that applied a thermally reflective coating to a proprietary microsphere. This acts in a similar manner to the thermally reflective black coating (black tile) seen on the underside and leading edges of the space shuttle and like the Aluminum foil radiant barrier film used in very modern home construction.
5)      INSULADD®  (Patented) was developed by David Page of Tech Traders LLC through his direct participation in the NASA Technology Exchange Program. United States Patent Application No. 61/359,492
FICTION:
1)     The Space Shuttle uses hollow ceramic microspheres for insulation.
2)     NASA ceramic insulating technology is used by “insulating paint” manufacturers.
3)     Hollow microspheres act like “mini-thermos bottles” when mixed into house paint.
4)     There are a number of “Insulating paint additive” and “Insulating paint” manufacturers who offer proven and tested products that really work.
5)     NASA “released” insulating paint technology to the public.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defines “home insulation” as “any material mainly used to slow down heat flow” (16 CFR Part 460.2) ENERGY STAR considers insulation to be products or materials that meet the FTC’s definition of “home insulation” and are used to insulate a whole wall, ceiling, or floor. These products include but are not limited to: “fiberglass, cellulose, mineral wool, whole-wall spray foam, rigid foam board, cotton fiber batts, and foil radiant barrier products.

INSULADD® products have over 15 years of verifiable testing and consumer reports showing the actual performance of these products.

Insuladd Company History
Tech Traders Inc. was formed by David Page following his participation in 1995 and 1996 with NASA in its Technology Exchange program.
David, wanted assistance developing coatings and paints that create a useful thermal reflectance and which would help homeowners enhance their homes insulation. After reading an article in the local paper advertising NASA technical assistance available to small business, he contacted Marshall's Technology Utilization Office, now the Technology Transfer program office, a division of that Center's Innovative Partnerships Program.

The folks at Marshall directed David to Kennedy Space Center, where he teamed up with a group of engineers from USBI who were developing a roof coating out of recycled car tires that would be applied using the Marshall-developed convergent spray technology. The hardest problem they faced was creating a low-cost, yet highly effective, product that was safe and non-toxic. Since David had experience in this field a strategic partnership was formed.

Mr. Page worked with NASA engineers using the  heat-reflecting tile tenchonlogy used on the space shuttle as the starting point for the development of INSULADD insulating products.   After a year of collaboration as well as additional testing with Dr. Heinz Poppendiek of the San Diego-based Geoscience Ltd., a research and development firm specializing in heat transfer, fluid flow, mass transfer, micro meteorology, biophysics, engineering design, system fabrication, product evaluation, and the measurement of thermal, mechanical, and fluid properties, Page felt that he had a product ready for market.
He was able to incorporate this technology via a proprietary modification and manufacturing process into the Insuladd line of insulating house paints, primer, and roof coatings. These products continue to lead the way in this technology.
The Insuladd solution is safe, economical, "green" and effective and is available world wide through Tech Traders U.S. and international distribution network.

Insuladd's E-Coat roof coating is an ENERGY STAR qualified product and has had much acclaim by U.S and international media. The Insuladd line of insulating paint products are non-solvent, low VOC and California code compliant.
Tech Traders Inc. has seen a number of companies spring up that claim to have NASA technology. These companies are simply adding common microsphere products to paints or selling them as "insulating additives for paint". Tech Traders Inc. recommends that consumers look closely for real and verifiable 3rd party laboratory testing prior to purchasing any product that claims to be an insulating paint or insulating additive.
With crude oil prices rising at frightening rates it is expected that energy costs will follow. You can be assured that Tech Traders Inc. will continue its work in providing real products that help homeowners reduce their heating and cooling expenses in a safe and efficient, cost effective manner!
